Five Best iPhone Earphones and Headphones

One of the features of the stunning Apple iPhone is the ability to listen to music. One of the most annoying features of the iPhone is the ability to listen to some one else’s music, whether you want to or not.

It’s fair to say, that while Apple make great computers and the iPhone is probably the best multi-use phone on the market, their earphones leave something to be desired. Actually, they suck. So, if you have decided not to inflict your musical choices on all around you, here are what I consider to be the best iphone headphones on the market. Bear in mind - the iPhone has a recessed socket, so you will need an adapter to use some of these.

                    V-Moda Vibe Earphones
                V-Moda Vibe Earbuds

I won a pair of these in a competition recently, and they are very, very good. I will not bother going into technical specifications because that often does not tell you how good a pair of earphones sound.

Extremely good bass without distortion, comfortable and extremely good as far as cutting out noise from around you. I can recommend these wholeheartedly. They are light, well made and I think will last a long time. If you buy a pair of these, you will probably never need to buy another pair of ear phones.

The only proviso I will make is that they need to be properly inserted using the correct size of adapter to work to their best. They are apparently “hot” as well, which I was not aware of, so these are probably the only trendy gadget I am ever likely to own.

Be sure to buy the ones that fit the iPhone or buy the adapter too.

V-MODA Vibe Duo Earbuds/Headset (iPhone Compatible) - BlackAmazon Price: $29.94
List Price: $79.95

                    B&O A8 earphones
                Bang & Olufsen A8

B&O make arguably the best quality audio equipment on the market. I have listened to these, and they are hands down the best sound you can get from a digital music player. But they are not cheap - $160 give or take. You can buy them used, in fact Amazon and Ebay usually have some for sale.

Be careful buying them on Ebay. This is not widely publicized, but there are a lot of fake A8s around. If you choose to buy used, be sure to check they have an original receipt to prove they are originals – Do not buy them if the seller cannot prove they are genuine. They fit differently from the others on this list, but are superb sound quality.

Bang & Olufsen A8 Earphones (Aluminum/Black)Amazon Price:

                    Sennheiser CX-300 earphones
                Sennheiser CX-300

These have probably the best bass of all the earphones on this list, but at a cost to the mid-range and treble. If you like a lot of bass, these are you best bet. Good quality, well made and once again, probably the last pair of ear phones you will need to buy. I don’t like a lot of heavy bass, but they are extremely good quality.

Sennheiser  CX300-B In-Ear Stereo HeadphoneAmazon Price: $20.54
List Price: $49.95Sennheiser CX 300-II Precision - Headphones ( in-ear ear-bud ) - blackAmazon Price: $79.95

                    Shure noise isolating E4-n earphones
                Shure E4-n Sound Isolating Earphones

Another great sounding pair of earphones, but once again – pretty expensive. The better quality electronics tend to be less heavily discounted, and these are no different. These have the best noise canceling capability and you could almost say they are like a pair of ear plugs with music. If you spend a lot of time in a high noise environment or on air planes, these are definitely the best. Light weigh, well made and, if you are into that sort of thing, with a gold plated plug.

Shure E4c-n Sound Isolating Earphones (Black)Amazon Price: $319.99

                    Sony MDR-EX90LP
                Sony MDR-EX90LP Stereo earphones

These are a good mid-priced set of earphones – compared to the Apple version, light years ahead. Sony have been making these sort of earphones for a number of years and they just keep getting better and better. Perhaps not so good with the bass, they offer extremely good sound quality. Amazon discount them quite heavily and you can usually pick up a new pair for about $70 which is a pretty heavy discount. Probably the best value for money, but maybe not the best quality of this bunch.

Sony MDR-EX90LP Stereo EarphonesAmazon Price: $149.95
List Price: $99.99Other Apple iPhone accessories

Because of Apple’s decision to recess the earphone socket, you will need to either buy iPhone specific ear phones, or buy one of these guaranteed-to-get-lost adapters. And it also appears than you need to buy a book to be able to understand how your Apple iPhone works. There are a selection of other accessories here also.

I really can't get into the iPhone.. I just don't like the PDA look of it. :( The earbud thing is very interesting though. I love the earbuds my Nano came with.. aren't they Bose? Maybe not. Bose would be pretty high quality, though. Sennheiser makes very good mics, I'd be interested to hear their earbuds.

Mark Knowles Hub Author 3 years ago

I don't have oone myself:) They are VERY expensive in France,LOL Bose are pretty good, but if they are the ones Apple supplied, these are a lot better. Sennheiser started life in mics and headphones - They are extremely good.

Same here, I don't have one.

Great ideas for us Mark. I know that it makes listening to music or a call that much easier.. Thanks

Those Bang and Olufsen headphones look great! I find ear buds to be uncomfortable.

I actually recommend using the Denon C700 earphones as they are very good for people who listen to vocals rather than bass heavy audio.About the Bang and Olufsen earphones, it is better if you can try them first somehow as they are not a perfect fit for everyone's ears.

i agree on the  V-Moda Vibe Earbuts that they have a good sound. There is only one catch they die pretty quick. I bought a pair, and one ear phone stopped after 4 months, i used them daily but well for that price you would expect they last longer. I also saw that a lot of people had the same problem.

Sebastien 3 years ago

I also agree on the V-Moda.. It's very good as it has a balance range of high and low. Definitely the bass is very noticeable compare to other similar earphones. The new version of V-Mode has its plug redesigned since Aug 08. I had mine replaced with them and the new pair is just awesome. So recommended .. again..

as this is a bit older, any updates on the B&O that are for the iPhone.  Considereing the purchase but the reviews are mixed on the Apple store site.  One can never tell if the reviews are real or not.

Man, I love your hub. I've upvoted like 10 of your articles so far. Keep up the good work.

v-moda must have a huge marketing budget. I suppose when you take a pair of $25 of earphones and sell for $80 then you have enough profit margin to pay for heavy marketing.

V-moda are made by the same people who make Soundwise (of the UK) and Skull Candy. The V-moda vibe was the forerunner to the Soundwise G4 ($40)and skull Candy 'Full metal jacket'($60) Ok they don't look that similar but the componets inside are the same. If you read around you see Soundwise pulled the 1st version of the G4 because the right earphone died. They seemed to have fixed the problem(now they have 3 year guarantee) but v-moda vibe still has the issue. The vibe 2 seems ok though.

Mark Knowles Hub Author 2 years ago

Sandy - I have had a pair of the v-modas for some time and found np problems. I need to update this page I think :)

Mark, I've really enjoyed the "Shure" headphones. And comparing them to the noise cancellation of Bose's quiet comfort piece, I'll vote for Shure, hands down. A great read! Thanks for sharing.

My second pair of V-Moda just dies on me this - not more tha 3-4 mos old. Same story with my first pair. I think they should hold up a lot better for the price. I use them every day with my phone - but that IS the intended use....

-Very disappointing!

Excellent review of the Best iPhone Earphones. As a music lover, one would not want to settle for less than the best earphones. Thanks to your review, the wheat is separated from the shaft earphonewise.

Great hub!

thanks for this article--this is good for research purposes.  now all I need is an iphone.

Half of these headphones appear to have plugs that *won't* fit the iPhone.

Mark Knowles Hub Author 2 years ago

That is why you need the adapter. Not sure why Apple decided to recess the socket. Nonetheless - these are the best sounding I found.

i like Sony MDR-EX90LP Stereo earphones cos good bass sound

JR 23 months ago

I wouldn't recommend buying any of those earphones above. They are really bad for your ears. I'd say buying fuller earphones because A: they are comfier to wear. B: they have better quality sound and C: its better for your ears.

I just got a brand new pair from Philips. And its amazing quality. I'd recommend it to anyone who cares about the quality of the music they listen to.

Wun Fungi 22 months ago

Either call them "noise cancelling" or call them "noise isolating." But try to learn to call them correctly or don't call them at all. Ok?

melane 20 months ago

The Vmodas have a major design flaw. The earpiece is in the cord and requires a wire connection that over time deteriorates. I am already on my 3rd pair and now that it has been stolen I can finally buy something is made to last. Sound quality was great though!

Mark Knowles Hub Author 20 months ago

They seem to design them on purpose that way:)

I got the senheiser one...i love it so much..it is very good in bass...but now i'm considering to buy bose earphone..lots of people say it is better than senheiser cx-300, is it?

Mark Knowles Hub Author 20 months ago

I think it is a matter of personal preference. If you like bass, the sennheiser is good but I would say the overall quality is much the same.

So far the best I have heard for the iPhone are the HD-280. I bought the HD-480, 4 something but they were not as loud as the 280's.

jtrawinski 18 months ago

I would highly recommend the Sennheiser CX-300. I've had them for a few months now and they are fantastic. Great range.

I would also advise everyone to stay away from Bose, especially their earphones, they're overpriced and break very easily.

anyone can give me a web site where I can find cool and coloured iphone earphones?

Rockontommy 15 months ago

If you don't know what you are missing then you will be happy whatever. In my opinion if you buy from any of these brands you will get a good deal(Shure, Sennheiser, Soundwise). The Sennheiser  cx300 is good but the Soundwise T4 is very similar but slightly better.

Skullcandy produce some good earphones and also some rubbish. V-moda don't produce anything but they do rebrand and market a cheap chinese earphone. They sound ok but will not last very long.

Also watch out for fakes.

I'm a big fan of in-ear sound isolating earphones.  Just bought a pair of Phonak Audeo PFE 012s and love the fact I can hear details in my music that wasn't there with cheaper earphones.  Check out this top 10 best guide for some other ideas - http://www.hifiheadphones.co.uk/best-in-ear-headph

Or in other words, five of the best counterfeits on the market. Well four anyway.

The first gen V-moda's had far too many build quality issues, including the pair i had.

as for the rest, they're a counterfeites delight. good luck in trying to find a genuine pair.

jordan 9 months ago

I have had two pairs of the bang & olufsen A8s, although the sound is great quality the build quality isn't good enough for something this price. I have had the black bits on the arms fall off, one earphone wire wear off and the housing around the cable and 3.5mm jack come loose! (this cost me $90 NZD (about $50 US) to repair!).

I would recommenced avoid unless money isn't an issue, they will need replacing.

Think Tank 9 months ago

Bose does not equate to quality. A friend of mine spent 100 bucks for the bose ear buds and then had to pitch em a month later because the jack was poorly engineered. Beforehand the ear pieces kept falling off of the unit overall not a good buy. I have a pair of the shure scl4's and will never need another pair as long as i live they are perfect.

Do any of those you reviewed have all the iPhone headset functions??

What about the Klipsch Image S4i In-Ear Headphones with Mic and 3-Button Remote? Mine sound great and I can use all my iPhone functions with them: play/pause,volume, fast forward or back, and voice control, and phone calls. What is the point of the iPhone if you don't have all of that? AND great sound, once I got the Comply foam tips that fit my tiny ear canals. As a pro violinist into classical and jazz, I have high standards for sound quality. They are $99 list, now they have a $350 version I would like to hear. I recommend checking out other reviews specific to these headsets.

I would like to see a list & reviews of ONLY the ones with all of the control features of the Apple headset, but way better sound and looks.
